Moshe Feldenkrais brought movement, attention, scientific inquiry, and learning into a distinctive educational practice concerned with expanding human possibility.
Life / Work / Context
Moshe Feldenkrais was a physicist, engineer, inventor, martial artist, and educator. He studied at the Sorbonne, worked in scientific research in Paris, and became one of the first Europeans to earn a black belt in judo.
A serious knee injury became one catalyst for his sustained investigation of movement, sensation, nervous-system organization, development, and learning. That inquiry grew into the Feldenkrais Method, taught through group Awareness Through Movement lessons and individual Functional Integration lessons.
Movement Studies Academy studies his work as an educational lineage rather than a fixed collection of exercises. Particular attention is given to curiosity, differentiation, self-directed learning, and the way new options can emerge through attentive movement. Mia Segal's teaching is a central transmission point in MSA's relationship to this work.
